Ye Olde Tyme Braine Science

Before I begin, I should mention a possible bias: as a major in computational neuroscience, I sort of have a thing for the brain. What can I say? I think it’s cool. Now, I know some people like the heart, and other people like the lungs, and yet others like the kidneys, or the gallbladder, or the liver, or the spleen. I wholeheartedly agree that these are all perfectly fine and good organs. They certainly come in handy when it comes to bodily functions like digestion, respiration, blood circulation, hormonal secretion, and so on and so on; and indeed, most of these functions are critical for my survival. Make no qualms about it: I love my spleen. It’s just that I find the mysterious operation of the brain particularly engaging.

With that said, onto the shirt. It’s of the new batch of Heavy Rotation shirts from Heavytees.com, and it’s called Phrenology:

Phrenology - Heavy Tees

Even if you’re unfamiliar with the term ‘phrenology,’ you’ve almost certainly seen these sorts of olde-tyme brain charts that manage to localize different personality traits into numerous little compartmentalized regions of the surface of the brain. Needless to say, it’s all a bunch of crazy pseudoscience—but back in the 1800s, people were really into it. Now it’s mostly been relegated to being obliquely referenced on t-shirts and in They Might Be Giants songs (sorry about the RealAudio file). Which I don’t really have a problem with, since the shirts and songs seem to turn out pretty good.

P.S. They also have a lot of other new shirts both for women and for men.
