6th Ward at Barking Irons

Barking Irons recently released their latest series of t-shirts, called 6th Ward (their site is completely Flash-based, so I won’t be able to link directly to anything). Their brand is based entirely around the theme of historical New York City, especially some of the more unsavory bits, but 6th Ward places extra emphasis on firemen and, of course, the 6th Ward. Each of their designs has a bit of history to go a long with it, which you can find on the individual shirts’ pages; nearly every design is printed in at least two colorways. Sadly, there are no detail picturesof their intricate single-color prints. On with the pictures!

Bean Soup - Barking Irons
‘When fire broke out in New York the local fire brigade was likely the only hope of rescue. Around the 6th ward, the engine nicknamed “Bean Soup” was a welcome and hearty sight to all.’

Big 6 - Barking Irons
‘As a means of clenching political power, the infamous political scoundrel, Boss Tweed, fostered many of the New York fire houses. With them under his thumb he could have a ready supply of cronies and thugs all operating under the civic badge. His Americus 6 fire company was nicknamed Big 6 in honor of its notorious and elusive fire chief.

6th Ward - Barking Irons
‘This print pictures a likely occurrence in the Bloody Old Sixth Ward. A gentleman carefully removes his overcoat as he prepares for battle with an unsavory Bowery thug.’
