Zelda, Earthbound, and More at The King of Games

The King of Games is a group based in Kyoto that makes video-game shirts based which are officially licensed by Nintendo. This allows them to make awesome things. Case in point:

Zelda 20th Anniversary

This shirt commemerates the 20th anniversary of the Japanese release of The Legend of Zelda for the Famicom. The four shields represent the evolution of Link’s shield (from the series’s humble beginnings on the Famicom to the beautiful and epic Gamecube release, The Wind Waker), and the two crossed swords in the center of the design are (of course) Master Swords. And look! There’s Hylian text!

Hylian
I don’t know what this says, but it’s still TOTALLY RAD.

The shirt comes in heather grey and white, and though it’s sort of hard to tell, the print is in a rich, velvety green. You can also get the design on a hoodie in either grey or dark brown.

Not a Zelda fan? Wait— that’s a stupid question. Everyone likes Zelda. But maybe you’re just looking for a game that’s a wee bit more… esoteric. Like a game that features children who use psionic powers, yo-yos, and bottle rockets to deafeat oddball foes like Annoying Old Party Men, Big Piles of Puke, New Age Retro Hippies, and Unassuming Local Guys. Well, The King of Games has got you covered.

If you don’t already know, the game I’m referring to is the incomparable EarthBound. (Known in Japan as MOTHER. And yes, all those things I listed are real enemies you fight in the game.) The King of Games has one EarthBound shirt, and it features the iconic Starman baddie getting wailed on by Ness’s baseball bat. Well, you can’t see the bat, but you sure as hell can hear it.

As you can see, the text on this shirt has some kind of shiny quality to it, which probably accounts for the fact that it costs more than other shirts on the site. It’s all sold out in L and XL, so even if you’re keen on buying it, you might be out of luck. There’s also a little image and some text on the back:

This shirt was made for the re-release of MOTHER 1+2.

The King of Games just reprinted a bunch of their tees, so now’s probably the time for you to get one. A warning, however: the shirts are kind of pricey. And unless you live in Japan, you’ll have to deal with international shipping. Also, the U.S. dollar is PITIFUL and WEAK, so if you live in America, you have that working against you as well. All in all, it looks like it costs about $51 to ship one of the 20th Anniversary Zelda tees to North America. Personally, that’s a tad rich for my blood, but if you’re willing to shell out the dough, at least you can be sure that you’ve gotten yourself a unique and eye-catching Nintendo tee.

Yikes! Death threats because of a minority opinion about a videogame. The Zelda series (and most other videogames) just doesn’t have what I’m looking for in a game. Unless you specifically ask, I’m not going to get into what that might be, because it could turn into a relatively long rant… although I could probably do a bullet-point list.
