Resist Today, But Don’t Resist Resist Today

A couple of new releases over at Resist Today (whose website happened to get featured as an example of ornamentalism the other day in the well-Digged article Web Design-isms: 7 Surefire Styles that Work at Vitamin). Besides releasing a new colorway of Freak Show, they’ve also rolled out the dark and enigmatic The Fifth Eye.

Resist Today seem to have a penchant for creepy two-headed guys (see Two Guys and an Octopus). They’ve also started using discharge printing, so the prints will be really soft. I don’t know what it is with eyes, but they seem to be popping up in a lot of designs recently (like the new one at Poketo mentioned below and the two recent releases mentioned here).

Anyway, it’s time for a couple closeup and detail pictures now!

New Releases at Poketo

Have you ever wondered what it would look like if the All-Seeing Eye from the back of the $1 bill and some of its friends got into a big fight with spacefaring aliens riding ships shaped like aquatic animals? I know I do. All the time. So you can understand my glee when I saw this shirt amongst Poketo’s newest releases:

By my count, there are also 8 other new designs besides Alien, so you should go take a look at those if you haven’t seen them already.

UPDATE: There is a new interview with Poketo over at addic[tee]d!

I’ve Got Hair in My Eyes… Or Is It Eyes in My Hair?

There’s a new shirt available for pre-order at Cotton Werks for you fans of multi-modal sensory extravaganzas. Extravaganzae? Regardless of what the word is, the shirt still looks pretty trippy:

They also have another shirt available for pre-order called Food Chain. And if you’re not interested in waiting for a pre-order to get filled, there’s always the three items they currently have in stock: The Berry Thieves, Low Sodium, and Wings

Fantastic Bonanza Free T-Shirt Contest VI: Escape From Fantastic Bonanza Island

Man, these contests come and go faster than a fugitive on the freeway! It’s the seventh of the month once again, which means it is time for:

  • Announcing the winner-type person for last month
  • Announcing this month’s contest prompt
  • Swingin’ low and lazy for a month, at which point the process repeats itself in a perpetual cycle of contests and contesting

Time, then, to reveal last month’s winner:

Anti-Design

If the merchandise at Veer is for corporate designers, then Serendipity is definitely for anti-corporate designers. I’m sure you’ll get that feeling pretty quickly when viewing their storefront, considering the text on one of their colorful women’s t-shirts…

Please note: I’m fairly certain in this design is not Helvetica. Why do I think that? For one thing it looks kind of off (even for an extra black), and for another… well, see for yourself!

I Hate Helvetica - Serendipity
I Hate Helvetica at Serendipity

I Hate Helvetica is my favorite of Serendipity’s t-shirts. They’ve chosen a nice readable-yet-ornate font, a simple colorway, and added a nice flourish to what would otherwise be ‘just another text tee’ by embellishing both the front and back of a bottom corner with a leafy pattern.

Let’s Go Look for Fiddleheads

Look for Fiddleheads is a t-shirt shop over at Etsy where you can find a bunch of wonderfully olde-tyme designs plucked straight from the 19th century. From their Etsy profile:

The art on my tee shirts are from searching in very old books that belonged to my Grandmother. My favorites are the PENNY MAGAZINE; The Society For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge, published every Saturday (years 1834 and 1835.)

Perhaps you would be interested in wearing this shirt with this elegant image of the noble California Redwood?

SquidFire: New Site, New Designs, New Awesomeness!

In addition to their clean new website, SquidFire have released new items for all of their customers: men, women, children, even babies! Their designs are getting more playful, ever cuter… and increasingly cautionary. Allow me to demonstrate with some of my favorites:

Deep Space - Kevin Sherry - SquidFireGargoyles - Kevin Sherry - SquidFire
Deep Space & Gargoyles NEW! at SquidFire

SquidFire artist Kevin Sherry has been playing around with designs that sprout from the bottom hem for a while (see Vines), and Gargoyles is the most recent of these. It is also a direct threat: unless you support small business, SquidFire will released their well-trained gargoyle fleet on your hometown. Deep Space, on the other hand, warns against spacebound curiosity.

Fairy Tale - Kevin Sherry - SquidFireDeep Sea - Kevin Sherry - SquidFire
Fairy Tale & Deep Sea NEW! at SquidFire

Among the prominent appearances of another of Kevin’s favorite themes, cephalopods, Deep Sea stands out. Although it is similar to their Deep Sea Discovery tote bag, I feel that the design on the tee is better composed. And a word of advice: always keep a larger net in reserve… just in case. Just as seriously, Fairy Tale seems almost to be a response to the recently discovered phenomenon of happiness-sensing wolves.
