You might know by now how big a fan I am of Monsieur T. (I have written about them five times before). Anyway, if you recall the preview of their Spring/Summer ‘07 line that I did precisely three months ago… those shirts have just launched! I actually had the pleasure to see three of them (Destroy, Poseidon’s Rage, and The Fury of Zeus) up close and personal a couple days prior at the Reed College bookstore.

Destroy and Poseidon’s Rage NEW! at Monsieur T.
As usual, Monsieur T. have detail pictures of their designs that let you see the elegant detail of each. Zeus and Poseidon both fill the shirt with their large contrast prints, which looks really great. Although I didn’t think to actually touch the prints when I had the chance, they looked very crisp and smooth. The print of The Fury of Zeus looked a little redder when I saw it in person than it does in the picture on their shop page (or maybe it’s just my monitor). It’s neat that the white and black print of Berserk glows in the dark, but I like the light blue on asphalt colorway more.

P.S. I guess it’s fairly germane to mention that I ran into two people in the last few weeks wearing Monsieur T.’s Destroyed Fidel hat (sold out) at my school (Reed College). What a WACKY coincidence! Well… maybe not so wacky, considering they’re based in Portland, OR (where Reed College happens to be). Nevertheless, I feel like my life needs a bit more wack, so I’m going to stick with the wacky coincidence theory.
There has been some, admittedly fairly minor, controversy down in the comments of the Josh Spear entry about the Monsieur T. Spring/Summer ‘07 Preview. Basically, it amounts to whether their Tribute to Mondrian is a blatant rip-off. I championed Monsieur T., since I believe that although the shirt is definitely in Mondrian’s unmistakable style, it is not a copy of his work.

So, what do you think? Rip-off or legitimate?
P.S. If you missed our own preview of Monsieur T.’s spring/summer ‘07 line… well, here it is.
This time around, my favorites at Monsieur T. are all the work of Ryan Berkley, whom I happened to meet at Reed College (where I currently attend) because I was wearing one of his designs, Berserk.
